Rumor Spreading with Bounded In-Degree

چکیده
We consider a variant of the well-studied gossip-based model of communication for disseminating information in a network. Classically, in each time unit, every node u is allowed to contact a single random neighbor v. If u knows the data (rumor) to be disseminated, node v learns it (known as push) and if node v knows the rumor, u learns it (known as pull). While in the classic gossip model, each node is only allowed to contact a single neighbor in each time unit, each node can possibly be contacted by many neighboring nodes. If, for example, several nodes pull from the same common neighbor v, v manages to inform all these nodes in a single time unit. In the present paper, we consider a restricted model where at each node only one incoming request can be served. As long as only a single piece of information needs to be disseminated, this does not make a difference for push requests. It however has a significant effect on pull requests. If several nodes try to pull the information from the same common neighbor, only one of the requests can be served. In the paper, we therefore concentrate on this weaker pull version, which we call restricted pull. We distinguish two versions of the restricted pull protocol depending on whether the request to be served among a set of pull requests at a given node is chosen adversarially or uniformly at random. As a first result, we prove an exponential separation between the two variants. We show that there are instances where if an adversary picks the request to be served, the restricted pull protocol requires a polynomial number of rounds whereas if the winning request is chosen uniformly at random, the restricted pull protocol only requires a polylogarithmic number of rounds to inform the whole network. Further, as the main technical contribution, we show that if the request to be served is chosen randomly, the slowdown of using restricted pull versus using the classic pull protocol can w.h.p. be upper bounded by O(∆/δ · logn), where ∆ and δ are the largest and smallest degree of the network. ar X iv :1 50 6. 00 82 8v 1 [ cs .D C ] 2 J un 2 01 5

Gossip vs. Markov Chains, and Randomness-Efficient Rumor Spreading | Proceedings of the Twenty-Sixth Annual ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms | Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
We study gossip algorithms for the rumor spreading problem which asks one node to deliver a rumor to all nodes in an unknown network, and every node is only allowed to call one neighbor in each round. In this work we introduce two fundamentally new techniques in studying the rumor spreading problem: First, we establish a new connection between the rumor spreading process in an arbitrary graph a...
متن کاملNonlinear spread of rumor and inoculation strategies in the nodes with degree dependent tie strength in complex networks
In the classic rumor spreading model, also known as susceptible-infectedremoved (SIR) model in which rumor spread out of each node proportionally to its degree and all edges have uniform tie strength between nodes. The rumor spread phenomenon is similar as epidemic spread, in which all the informed nodes spread rumor by informing their neighbor nodes. In earlier rumor spreading models, at each ...
متن کاملGossip vs. Markov Chains, and Randomness-Efficient Rumor Spreading
We study gossip algorithms for the rumor spreading problem which asks one node to deliver a rumor to all nodes in an unknown network. We present the first protocol for any expander graph G with n nodes such that, the protocol informs every node in O(log n) rounds with high probability, and uses Õ(log n) random bits in total. The runtime of our protocol is tight, and the randomness requirement o...
متن کاملRumor Spreading and Degree-Related Preference Mechanism on a Small-World Network
An alternate model for rumor spreading over small-world networks is suggested, of which two rumors (termed rumor 1 and rumor 2) have different nodes and probabilities of acceptance. The propagation is not symmetric in the sense that when deciding which rumor to adopt, high-degree nodes always consider rumor 1 first, and low-degree nodes always consider rumor 2 first. The model is a natural gene...
متن کاملAdaptive Rumor Spreading
Motivated by the recent emergence of the so-called opportunistic communication networks, we consider the issue of adaptivity in the most basic continuous time (asynchronous) rumor spreading process. In our setting a rumor has to be spread to a population; the service provider can push it at any time to any node in the network and has unit cost for doing this. On the other hand, as usual in rumo...
متن کاملFinding Rumor Sources on Random Trees
We consider the problem of detecting the source of a rumor which has spread in a network using only observations about which set of nodes are infected with the rumor and with no information as to when these nodes became infected. In a recent work (Shah and Zaman 2010) this rumor source detection problem was introduced and studied. The authors proposed the graph score function rumor centrality a...
